This law states that the ratio of a metal's thermal conductivity k to its electrical conductivity σ is a constant at a constant temperature T , regardless of the type of metal. It was discovered experimentally in 1853. When calculations are made assuming that both the thermal and electrical conduction of metals are due to free electrons, k /σ T approximately becomes a universal constant, which is called the Wiedemann–Franz constant.
