...The characters for jika-tabi were used because they were called chikatabi in the Kanto region. They were invented in 1922 (Taisho 11) by brothers Tokujiro and Shojiro Ishibashi, tabi manufacturers (the predecessors of Bridgestone), and were released in January of the following year as Asahi jika-tabi. Footwear with rubber soles sewn onto tabi was already in use in the Hanshin region and elsewhere, but jika-tabi had rubber soles glued on and had slip-resistant grooves, and were marketed as a completely new and durable footwear. ...
