His first name was Sadami, he was commonly known as Denbei and Genzaemon, his pen name was Dowa, and his pen name was Seiro and Nonosha. He was from Edo. His father was a samurai of the Karasuyama domain in Shimotsuke (Tochigi prefecture). He studied waka poetry under Yokose Sadaomi, a poet and retainer of the shogunate, and later entered the school of Kato Senkage. He achieved fame as a scholar of Japanese classics rather than as a poet. He was particularly known for his outstanding achievements in the study of Eiga Monogatari and Okagami. In addition to Okagami Tankansho and Eiga Monogatari Sho, he also wrote the essay Nonosha Zuihitsu and the poetry collection Nonosha Shu.
