Ogata [town] - Ogata

Japanese: 緒方[町] - おがた

This is an old town in Ono County, southern Oita Prefecture. Its center is the Ono River and its tributary, the Ogata River basin, and it was a grain-producing region for the Takeda Domain. After the opening of the Toyohashi Main Line, a settlement developed around the station, and ore and timber from the Obira Mine was transported there. Today, in addition to timber, the town produces rice, vegetables, kabosu, chestnuts, shiitake mushrooms, and is also a thriving beef cattle producer. The southern mountainous region is part of the Sobokatamuki Quasi-National Park. In March 2005, it merged with Mie Town, Asaji Town, Ono Town, Inukai Town, Kiyokawa Village, and Chitose Village in Ono County to become a city, Bungo-Ono City. Area: 147.96 ^km2 . Population: 6,653 (2003).

大分県南部，大野郡の旧町。中心は大野川と支流緒方川の流域で，竹田藩の穀倉地帯であった。豊肥本線開通後駅前集落が発達，尾平(おびら)鉱山の鉱石，木材を搬出した。現在は木材のほか米，野菜，カボス，クリ，シイタケなどを産し，肉牛の生産も盛ん。南部の山地は祖母傾(そぼかたむき)国定公園に属する。2005年３月大野郡三重町，朝地町，大野町，犬飼町，清川村，千歳村と合併し市制，豊後大野市となる。147.96km²。6653人（2003）。
