A bulbous plant of the Iridaceae family, with about six species distributed in South Africa. The leaves are linear or sword-shaped and rooted. The flowers have six cup-shaped tepals and grow in a spike at the top of the stem. The most commonly cultivated species is S. tricolor, with orange flowers with black markings and a yellow flower tube. White, yellow, and scarlet varieties have also been developed. The bulbs are planted in the fall. As they require a temperature of about 4°C to survive the winter, they should be placed in a frame or indoors if potted, or in a sunny location with frost protection to overwinter if planted outdoors. When the above-ground parts turn yellow after flowering, the bulbs should be dug up and dried for storage.
