...Under a total dictatorship, aspiring writers were forced to endure censorship, be banned from writing, and be arrested, exiled, or sent into exile. Under such circumstances, the unknown writer Moravia's "The Indifferent People" (1929) was confiscated for its ruthless depiction of the bourgeois life under Fascism, and Alvaro's "The People of Aspromonte" (1930), which looked at the poverty of the southern peasants, was a precursor to the regionalism of neorealism. Vittorii published "The Red Carnation" (1933-36) in Solaria, the successor to Gobbetti's magazine "Baletti," under strict censorship, and at the same time, Vittorii, together with Pratolini and Bilenchi, strongly advocated the anti-bourgeois orientation of early Fascism in the Florentine Fascist organ, "Bargello." ...
