A pigment found in the chloroplasts of algae. The proteins bound to this pigment are called biliproteins or phycobiliproteins. They are derivatives of tetrapyrroles and there are three types: phycocyanobilin, phycoerythrobilin, and phycourobilin. There are two types of pigment proteins: phycoerythrin (red) and phycocyanobilin (blue), which mainly contain phycoerythrobilin and phycocyanobilin, respectively. These act as accessory pigments to chlorophyll. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
