A representative furniture maker in the Louis XVI style. Born near Essen, Germany, he joined the workshop of the Parisian furniture maker Eben in 1754. He took over the workshop upon Eben's death in 1763, qualified as a master ébéniste in 1767, and married his master's widow the following year. In 1769, he completed the production of a bureau for Louis XV's study, which Eben had begun in 1760, and its intricate marquetry and gilded bronze fittings were of the highest standard of the time. In 1774, he was appointed court furniture maker, and produced a commode (chest of drawers) for the royal bedroom and a mechanical table in collaboration with the German mechanic Märklein.

ルイ16世様式の代表的家具師。ドイツのエッセン近郊に生まれ，1754年パリの家具師エバンの工房に入る。63年エバンの死によりその工房を引き継ぎ，67年親方maître ébénisteの資格を取得，翌年師の未亡人と結婚した。エバンが60年に着手したルイ15世の書斎用ビュローの製作を69年に完成させ，その精緻な寄木細工と金めっきブロンズ金具の装飾は当代の最高水準のものであった。74年には宮廷家具師に任ぜられ，王宮の寝室用コモード(簞笥)や，ドイツの機械工メルクラインと共同してからくりのあるテーブルなどを製作した。
