1734‐1806 A representative furniture maker in the Louis XVI style. Born near Essen, Germany, he joined the workshop of the Parisian furniture maker Eben in 1754. He took over the workshop upon Eben's death in 1763, qualified as a master ébéniste in 1767, and married his master's widow the following year. In 1769, he completed the production of a bureau for Louis XV's study, which Eben had begun in 1760, and its intricate marquetry and gilded bronze fittings were of the highest standard of the time. In 1774, he was appointed court furniture maker, and produced a commode (chest of drawers) for the royal bedroom and a mechanical table in collaboration with the German mechanic Märklein.
