Year of death: Before Tenchi 6 (667) Year of birth: Emperor Kōgyoku 3? (644) She was the daughter of Emperor Tenchi and his wife, the concubine Tonochi-musume, in the mid-7th century. Empress Jito was her full sister. Her mother was so saddened by the innocent death of her father, Soga no Kurayamada Ishikawamaro, that she died soon after giving birth to her younger brother, Prince Take. It seems that the young Ota and her sister were raised by their grandmother, Empress Kogyoku. In accordance with her father Tenchi's political strategy, she became the wife of her uncle, Prince Oama (Emperor Tenmu), at a young age in 656 (the second year of the reign of Saimei), and gave birth to Princess Daihaku in 657 and Prince Otsu in 663 (the second year of Tenchi), both on the way to the west to rescue Baekje. After the defeat, she returned to Kyoto. She died a few years later and was buried in 663 in a grave in front of the tomb of Empress Kogyoku. The two children she gave birth to on the battlefield following her father and husband were driven to death and disappointment by her younger sister, Empress Jito, who became Empress Tenmu after coming of age. <References> Naoki Kojiro, "Empress Jito" (Akiko Yoshie) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
