Goya y Lucientes, Francisco José de
Born: March 30, 1746, Fuendetodos, near Zaragoza
[Died] April 16, 1828. Spanish painter and printmaker from Bordeaux. In 1766 he moved to Madrid to study under the court painter F. Bayeu. In 1773 he married Bayeu's sister and settled in Madrid. He was recognized for the many sketches he produced for the Royal Tapestry Factory, and in 1889 he became the court painter of Charles IV. In 1895 he became president of the Academy, and in 1899 he became the first royal painter. He produced many masterpieces, including the clothed and nude "Maja" (Prado Museum, Madrid), and "Carlos IV and his Family" (1800, same museum). He also painted "The Uprising of May 2nd" and "Execution of May 3rd" (same museum), which were themes taken from the anti-Napoleonic wars, around 1814. Already showing a strong tendency towards satire and fantasy with his print series Los Caprichos (1799) and The Disasters of War (first published in 1863), he retired to the "House of the Deaf" and produced a series of so-called "Black Paintings". To avoid persecution, he later went into exile in Bordeaux, France in 1824, where he painted bullfights and other subjects. His vivid sense of color, depiction of light, and combination of a sharp view of reality and visionary qualities are considered to have paved the way for modern painting.
