[Relationship with melody type and mode]
Unlike a melody, a scale is a sequence of tonal materials arranged in order of pitch, but when considering the characteristics of the connections between tones in an actual melody, it can be thought of as not only an ascending scale, but also a descending scale. Some Indian ragas have a zigzag progression with alternating ascending and descending tones, but it is somewhat of a stretch to include these in a scale.
