In Greek mythology, they are one-eyed giants with a single eye in the middle of their foreheads. According to Hesiod, they were the three brothers born from the union of Uranus and Gaia, who, together with the hundred-handed giants known as the Hecatonchires, were cast underground by their father, freed once by Cronus, then returned to their original place, and finally freed by Zeus. In gratitude for this, they created thunder and lightning for him, helping the Olympian gods win the battle against the Titans. They are also said to have made Poseidon's trident and Hades' helmet of invisibility. In later myths, they are seen as assistants to the blacksmith god Hephaestus, working in his workshop in the crater of a volcano. Unlike these master blacksmiths, the Cyclopes that appear in Homer's Odyssey are ferocious, barbaric creatures with no connection to culture who live on the Italian coast near Naples and raise sheep. It is said that Odysseus blinded one of them, Polyphemus, which angered Poseidon, the sea god and father of the monsters, and Odysseus was prevented from returning home for a long time by the god.
