A state in southern Brazil. Area: 95,985 km2. Population: 4,836,600 (1995). The state capital is Florianopolis. Facing the Atlantic Ocean, it is located between latitudes 25°58' and 29°22' south. A coastal mountain range runs north and south along the Atlantic coast, from which a mountainous plateau of about 1,000 m above sea level spreads inland, gradually decreasing in altitude to the west as it reaches the Uruguay River. In Florianopolis, the average annual temperature is 19.8°C, the average annual precipitation is 1,213 mm, the maximum temperature from November to April exceeds 30°C, and the minimum temperature from May to August is below 10°C, and some inland plateau areas experience frost.

ブラジル南部の州。面積9万5985km2。人口483万6600(1995)。州都はフロリアノポリス。大西洋に面し，ほぼ南緯25゜58′と29゜22′との間に位置する。大西洋岸に沿って南北に海岸山脈が走り，そこから内陸に向かって標高1000m前後の山がちの高原が広がり，西方に高度を徐々に低めながらウルグアイ川に達する。フロリアノポリスで，年平均気温は19.8℃，年降水量1213mm，11～4月の最高気温は30℃を超し，5～8月の最低気温は10℃以下となって，内陸高原地域では霜のおりる所もある。
