The Paleozoic Era is characterized by the appearance of organisms larger than microscopic size that have hard tissue, i.e., chitinous or calcareous skeletal structures (mainly shells), for the first time in the geological era. During the Precambrian Era, which lasted for about 3 billion years after life first emerged, there were only tiny shellless primitive organisms, and this is called the Cryptozoic Era.
