Synthetic natural gas (English spelling)

Japanese: 合成天然ガス - ごうせいてんねんガス（英語表記）synthetic natural gas

Abbreviated as SNG. Also called substitute natural gas. Natural gas is mainly composed of methane, but SNG is a high-calorie fuel gas synthesized to replace natural gas. It is generally produced from coal, but when coal is gasified using oxygen or steam, only a low-calorie gas with a high content of carbon monoxide and hydrogen is obtained. Transporting low-calorie gas over long distances by pipeline is costly. Therefore, high-calorie gas is needed, and there are several possible methods for producing it.

略称SNG。代替天然ガスsubstitute natural gasともいわれる。天然ガスはメタンを主成分とするが，この天然ガスを代替するために合成された高カロリーの燃料用ガスをいう。一般に石炭を原料として生産されるが，石炭を酸素や水蒸気を用いてガス化すると，一酸化炭素や水素などの成分の多い，発熱量の低いガスしか得られない。低カロリーのガスは遠距離をパイプラインで輸送するとコストがかさむ。そこで高カロリーガスが必要になるが，その製造法は幾通りか考えられる。
