Bulbar palsy - Kyuumonami

Japanese: 球麻痺 - きゅうまひ
Bulbar palsy - Kyuumonami
Paralysis caused by damage to the motor nuclei of the medulla oblongata. The word "bulba" is a colloquial term for the medulla oblongata, which contains the cranial nerve nuclei that control the movement of muscles such as the tongue, pharynx, palate, and larynx. Damage to the medulla oblongata often causes problems with chewing, swallowing, and even articulation. Progressive bulbar palsy accompanied by significant atrophy of the tongue is a typical example, but acute bulbar palsy caused by bleeding or inflammation in the medulla oblongata is often fatal. Bilateral brain damage above the medulla oblongata can also cause similar symptoms, but there is no atrophy of the tongue, and it is distinguished as pseudobulbar palsy.
