In November 1620, on the hill of Bílá hora (Weissen Berg in German), a battle between the forces of the Holy Roman Emperor and the forces of Bohemian nobles and mercenaries, took place. It is also known as the Battle of the White Mountain. It was the decisive battle during the Bohemian-Palatinate War (1618-20), which marked the beginning of the Thirty Years' War (1618-48), and was the cause of the spread of hostilities throughout Europe. In May 1618, Bohemian Protestant nobles, who had rejected the appointment of Ferdinand of Habsburg (later Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II), who was feared by Protestants as a persecutor of heretics, as King of Bohemia (July 1617), threw the king's representative and three others out of a window in Prague Castle into the moat.
