Blood Daruma

Japanese: 血達磨物 - ちだるまもの
Blood Daruma
A type of Kabuki-Kyogen. Based on the true story of a loyal retainer protecting a precious scroll of Daruma doll with his own blood during a fire at the Hosokawa family home, this group of works has the motifs of homosexuality and masochism. The first dramatization was in Kyoto's Hotei-za Theatre, "Kashiyu Sakuraga Yatuchi no Daruma" (Blood Daruma of Sakuragayatsuchi), in 1712 (Shotoku 2). This was followed by the play "Asakusa Miracle Record" (written by Chikamatsu Tokuzō) at Kado in Osaka in May 1797 (Kansei 9), which was reconstructed against the backdrop of the family feud between the Hosokawa and Akita families and became a huge hit. It was introduced to Edo in April 1800 at the Ichimura-za Theatre, as "Otoko Musubi Chikai no Riyugan" (A Man's Alliance Wish), and the storyline was largely the same as the previous work.
