This is a biography of 12 emperors from Julius Caesar to Domitian, written by the 1st century Roman biographer Suetonius. It is also translated as "Lives of the Caesars" or "Lives of the Twelve Caesars." Except for a portion of the beginning, it has been passed down almost completely to the present day. Due to its strong interest in the subject and its concise writing style, this book has been a model for biographies up until the early modern period. Each chapter begins with the origins of the protagonist, and describes his or her life from childhood to ascending to the throne. Then, the personality and actions of each individual are described, and many anecdotes are inserted. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
