Osaka Castle (Osaka Castle)

Japanese: 大坂城(大阪城) - おおさかじょう

The remains of a castle in Higashi-ku, Osaka City. It is also called Kin Castle. The northern end of the Kamimachi Plateau where the castle is located is a strategic location with the Yodo River to the north, a tributary of the Yamato River and marshes to the east, flat land facing the sea to the west, and plateaus only to the south. During the Sengoku period, in 1532 (Tenbun 1), Hongan-ji Temple made this its base, creating a temple town with a hall as the center, and building a moat and earthworks to prepare for a castle. Oda Nobunaga, who aimed to establish a unified government, urged Hongan-ji Temple to leave Osaka, and the conflict between the two sides escalated into the 11-year-long Ishiyama War.

大阪市東区にある城跡。金(錦)城ともいう。城の位置する上町台地の北端は，北側に淀川，東に大和川支流と低湿地，西は平地から海に臨み，南方にのみ台地が続くという要害の地である。戦国時代，1532年(天文1)本願寺がここを本拠とし，御堂を中心に寺内町をつくり，濠，土塁を築いて城構えをしたのにはじまる。統一政権樹立を目ざす織田信長は，本願寺に大坂からの退去をせまり，両者の対立は11年にわたる石山合戦に発展した。
