土壌を風乾させた後に湛水(たんすい)状態または畑状態の水分におくと,土壌中の有機態窒素の一部は微生物により容易に分解されて,湛水状態の場合にはアンモニア態窒素が,畑状態の場合にはアンモニア態窒素と硝酸態窒素とが,それぞれ生成・集積してくる現象をさす。これらの無機態窒素は,外から施用される窒素質肥料にくらべて水稲や畑作物に吸収利用されやすいことと土壌自体から生成されることから,地力窒素とよばれている。
