The capital of Piauí state in northeastern Brazil. It is located on the eastern bank of the middle reaches of the Parnaiba River, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean, at an altitude of about 70m, and is connected by a bridge to Timón, in Maranhão state, on the opposite bank. It was built in 1852 as the new capital of the state, and has since developed into a major commercial center in the middle reaches of the Parnaiba River. It distributes beef cattle, leather, rice, cotton, cassava, etc., and has factories for textiles, sugar, distilled spirits, soap, lumber, etc. It is also home to the Federal University of Piauí (1968). It is located about 350km upstream from the mouth of the Parnaiba River, and shallow-draft ships sail up the river to ship beef cattle, leather, babassu palm oil, etc. It is connected by rail and road to Luís Correia, a port at the mouth of the river, and São Luís, the main port of Maranhão state. Population: 598,449 (estimated 1991).

ブラジル北東部，ピアウイ州の州都。大西洋に注ぐパルナイバ川の中流部東岸，標高約 70mの地にあり，対岸のマラニャン州のティモンと橋で結ばれる。 1852年同州の新州都として建設され，以後パルナイバ川中流域の主要商業中心地として発展。肉牛，皮革，米，綿花，キャッサバなどを集散し，織物，製糖，蒸留酒，石鹸，製材などの工場がある。ピアウイ連邦大学 (1968) 所在地。パルナイバ川の河口から約 350km上流にあたり，喫水の浅い船が遡航し，肉牛，皮革，ババスヤシ油などを積出すほか，同川河口部の港ルイスコレイア，およびマラニャン州の主要港サンルイスと鉄道，道路で結ばれる。人口 59万 8449 (1991推計) 。
