The central city of the southern Bicol Peninsula in the southeast of Luzon, Philippines. The capital of Albay Province. It overlooks Albay Bay, which opens into the Philippine Sea, and has a port protected at its mouth by Lapu-Lapu Island and Batan Island. The port is deep, but is often hit by typhoons. It was colonized by Spain in 1639 and named after the first governor, M. Legazpi. It opened as a port in the 1870s and exported large amounts of Manila hemp, its processed products, and copra. There are many Manila hemp processing plants and a large oil storage facility. It is located at the southern foot of Mayon Volcano and is the tourist base. It has a domestic airport, is the terminus of the railway from Manila, and has roads to various parts of the province. Population 121,000 (1990 estimate). Legazpi |
