Like many other old Russian cities, Moscow reflects its historical origins as a city with the Kremlin as its center, and the ring roads that surround the city center like the rings of a tree are centered on the Kremlin and Kitai-gorod, the former commercial and industrial district facing the Kremlin across Red Square. The outermost of these, the Moscow Ring Road (total length 109 km), has served as the city's border since 1960.
