…the abbreviation for Federal Aviation Administration in the United States. The Federal Aviation Act of 1958 established the Federal Aviation Agency as an independent agency to handle aviation safety. In 1966, it became part of the Department of Transportation and changed its name to the Federal Aviation Administration.
