In the mid-18th century, the Italians Pergolesi, Sanmartini, and Baldassare Galuppi (1706-85), the German Graun brothers (Johann Gottlieb Graun (c. 1702-71) and Carl Heinrich G. (c. 1703-59)), Quantz, and Emanuel Bach were some of the most well-known. However, some German composers, including the sons of JS Bach, moved towards the intense emotional expression of the Sensitive Style, which could be called the storm-and-storm period of music, and gradually moved away from the aristocratic and decorative character of the original Rococo and Elegant Styles. …
