...The term "museum" corresponds to the term "museum of fine arts," "musée des beaux-arts" (French), or "Kunstmuseum" (German), but the Louvre and the Vienna Kunsthistorisches Museum, which store and exhibit not only works of art in the narrow sense (paintings, sculptures, crafts, etc.) but also archaeological relics, weapons, clothing, etc., are strictly speaking considered to be "art museums." In contrast, the term "pinacoteca" (Italian) or "pinakothek" (German), which is of Greek origin, is sometimes used to refer to art museums (picture galleries) that only collect paintings. The Pinakotheca in the Vatican Museums and the Alte Pinakothek in Munich are particularly well known.
