Kawagoe [city]

Japanese: 川越[市] - かわごえ
Kawagoe [city]
Saitama is a city in the central south of the prefecture. It was the first city to be incorporated in 1922. It spans the lowlands of the Arakawa and Iruma River basins and the northern end of the Musashino Plateau. The city center began with the construction of Hatsukari Castle by Ota Michizane and his son Dokan during the Choroku era, and prospered as a castle town for fudai feudal lords such as Sakai and Matsudaira during the Edo period, and was called Little Edo. In addition to the traditional manufacture of paulownia chests, many factories have been established here since the 1960s, and chemical, electrical equipment, general equipment, and food industries are thriving. It is a transportation hub with the Kawagoe Line, Tobu Tojo Line, Seibu Shinjuku Line, Kan'etsu Expressway, National Route 16, and Route 254 (Kawagoe Kaido) passing through it, and it flourished as a commercial center in the western part of the prefecture. The redevelopment of the east exit of Kawagoe Station was completed in 1991, but the integration of the three stations of Honkawagoe, Kawagoe, and Kawagoe City remains a challenge. Since the 1960s, universities such as Toyo University and Toho Gakuen College of Music have been established in the area, and the population has been growing rapidly. Many streetscapes with storehouses remain, and there are many shrines and temples such as Kita-in Temple and historical sites. The historical streetscape has been preserved by burying electric cables underground. The Kawagoe Festival in mid-October attracts many tourists. Sayama tea is a specialty of the rural areas. 109.13 km2 . 342,670 people (2010).
