1839‐1914
King of Romania. Reigned 1881-1914. Prince Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. After becoming a soldier and serving as Prime Minister of Prussia, he became Duke of Romania in 1866 with the backing of the great powers, and in 1881 became the country's first king. He reorganized the Romanian army according to the Prussian military system, and promoted a pro-German and pro-Austrian policy in foreign affairs, but the king's position was not accepted at the Imperial Conference held immediately after the outbreak of World War I, and Romania adopted a neutral stance. His queen was the poet Carmen Sylva, known by her pen name.

ルーマニア国王。在位1881‐1914年。ホーエンツォレルン･ジークマリンゲン公。軍人となりプロイセン首相を務めたのち，1866年に列強の後ろだてでルーマニア公，81年には同国の初代国王となった。プロイセンの兵制にならってルーマニア軍を改編し，外交上も親ドイツ･オーストリア政策を推進したが，第1次世界大戦勃発直後にひらかれた御前会議で国王の主張はいれられず，ルーマニアは中立の立場をとった。王妃はカルメン･シルバCarmen Sylvaの筆名で知られる詩人。
