1839‐1914 King of Romania. Reigned 1881-1914. Prince Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. After becoming a soldier and serving as Prime Minister of Prussia, he became Duke of Romania in 1866 with the backing of the great powers, and in 1881 became the country's first king. He reorganized the Romanian army according to the Prussian military system, and promoted a pro-German and pro-Austrian policy in foreign affairs, but the king's position was not accepted at the Imperial Conference held immediately after the outbreak of World War I, and Romania adopted a neutral stance. His queen was the poet Carmen Sylva, known by her pen name. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
