…the Gonzaga family ruled Mantua, Italy, from 1328 to 1627. There are two theories about their origins: they were knights and commoners. By the end of the 13th century, they had become a powerful family with land holdings in Mantua, Brescia, Ferrara, Reggio, Cremona, Verona, and Ivrea.
