All species are marine, attach to other objects with slightly spreading rhizoids, and form colonies that resemble tree branches, fans, or whips. They are found in shallow to deep seas, with many species found in warm seas. In the center of the colony is a strong axial bone, the surface of which is covered with numerous polyps and a thin coenchyma.
