...The reason why Freud's direct experience and the gap between his dynamic, topographical, and economic psychology of the unconscious, which he called metapsychology, are repeatedly pointed out is based on the above-mentioned characteristics of Freud's thought formation. In the notebook "Draft on a Scientific Psychology," written in the same year as "Studies in Hysteria," Freud himself gave up the intention of publishing it, but he clearly states at the beginning that "mental processes are described as states quantitatively determined by material elements that can be made explicit." This draft is valuable both for clearly showing the mechanistic side of Freud's thought and for developing the basic concept of metapsychology that he developed in later years. ...
