A technology that treats human voice as signal data and uses computers to perform information processing such as analysis, conversion, and synthesis. Specific topics include voice frequency analysis, voice recognition, voice synthesis, voice information compression, and efficient transmission and recording of voice information signals. Research into voice information processing began in 1939 when Bell Labs in the United States developed the vocoder, a device for encoding and decoding voice signals, and made great strides in the 1970s when it became possible to sample and digitize analog voice signals. Voice synthesis and voice compression have become fully practical with the advancement of digital signal processing hardware and software technology, but voice recognition has not yet been put to practical use due to issues such as the diversity of human voices and environmental noise.
