Orchestra - Orchestra

In ancient Greek theaters, this term referred to the semicircular area between the stage and the auditorium surrounding it, where dance, instrumental music, and choral singing were performed, and later came to be called the floor of modern theaters. The term was also applied to the group of instrumentalists who played between the stage and the auditorium, as in opera performances, and even when this group performed independently of the opera, it came to be called an orchestra.

古代ギリシアの劇場で、舞台とそれを囲むように設置された観客席との間にできた半円形の場所をさし、そこで舞踊や器楽、合唱が行われたため、のちに近代の劇場の平土間席の呼称になった。また、オペラの上演にみられるように、舞台と観客席の間で奏する器楽奏者のグループにもこのことばが適用され、さらにこのグループがオペラから独立して演奏する場合にも、オーケストラと称されるようになった。
