…Scipio Slataper (1888-1915), the Stuparich brothers Giani Stuparich (1894-1961), and Carlo S. (1894-1916) volunteered to fight against Austria during World War I, and served in the defense of the Trieste hinterland. Two of them committed suicide before being killed or captured, but they left behind diaries and musings about the tense mental conditions they faced during the war, shocking the Italian literary world. On the other hand, those who survived World War I, such as G. Stuparich and Virgilio Giotti (real name Vittorio Schönbeck, 1885-1957), and the generation that followed them, such as Pier Antonio Quarantotti Gambini (1910-65), fought against fascism during World War II, despite being oppressed for racial reasons. …
