Gang age

Gang age
A phenomenon is observed mainly in the middle to late school years when children form tightly-knit, closed groups of about 5 to 10 people of the same sex and become absorbed in group play. Such groups are called gangs, and this age came to be called the gang age, following the book The Gang Age (1926) by P.H. Furfey, an American who contributed to the study of gangs. Typically, children are seen to escape from the eyes of adults, create hideouts, group rules, codes, badges, and other signs of belonging, and engage in various group games, including adventures and pretend exploration, while strengthening their loyalty and unity to the group.
