Biblical studies is an academic endeavor that focuses on the Bible, which was introduced by Judaism and was later recognized as the canon by the Christian Church, in order to understand its form, content, and essence while maintaining connections with the broad range of regions and related literature related to it. Although biblical studies is a branch of Christian studies, it uses methods common to the general humanities and, with the help of linguistics, literary studies, archaeology, geography, history, anthropology, sociology, religious studies, and other disciplines, aims to grasp the various aspects of the Bible, language, geography, history, society, tradition, literature, and thought in a specialized or comprehensive manner, thereby contributing to an understanding of the origins and characteristics of Christianity as a historical religion.

聖書学とは，ユダヤ教によって伝えられ，さらにキリスト教会が正典と定めた聖書を主要対象とし，その形態，内容，本質を理解するため，それと関係する広範な地域と関係文献とのつながりを保ちつつ研鑽する学的営みである。聖書学は，キリスト教学の一科ではあるが，一般人文科学と共通する方法を用い，言語学，文芸学，考古学，地理学，歴史学，人類学，社会学，宗教学その他の学問の助けを得て，聖書の諸局面，言語，地誌，歴史，社会，伝承，文学，思想を専門的にあるいは総合的に把握し，歴史宗教としてのキリスト教の起源と特質の理解に資することを図る。
