The middle ear is separated from the external auditory canal by the tympanic membrane and consists of the tympanic cavity, mastoid sinus, and mastoid cell, and is connected to the nasopharynx by the Eustachian tube. (1) Tympanic Cavum The tympanic cavity (cavum tympani) is surrounded by six sides, its upper wall is connected to the middle cranial cavity through a bony wall, and its lower wall is a bony wall that is lower than the external auditory canal and is connected to the internal jugular bulb. The anterior wall contains the opening of the Eustachian tube and a bony canal that contains the tensor tympani muscle, and the facial nerve runs through the bone of the posterior wall, connecting to the mastoid sinus at the top.
