A village in Minamisaku District, eastern Nagano Prefecture. Population 4,734 (1995). A farming village spreads across the plateau at the eastern foot of the Yatsugatake Mountains. The Chikuma River flows north through the eastern part of the village, with National Route 141 running along the west bank and the JR Koumi Line running along the opposite bank. Rice is cultivated along the Chikuma River, along with flowers such as chrysanthemums and highland vegetables. Dairy cows, beef cattle and pigs are also widely raised. Development of villas is underway in the Yachiho Plateau, where the Yatsugatake Crossing Road (National Route 299) runs. Many tourists visit Ikenodaira Ranch and Shirakome Pond. 長野県東部,南佐久郡の村。人口4734(1995)。八ヶ岳東麓の高原に広がる農村。東部を千曲川が北流し,西岸を国道141号線,対岸をJR小海線が走る。千曲川沿いでの米作を中心に,キクなどの花卉,高原野菜の栽培が行われる。乳牛,肉牛,豚の飼育も盛ん。八ヶ岳横断道路(国道299号線)が通じる八千穂高原では別荘地の開発が進む。池ノ平牧場,白駒池を訪れる観光客が多い。八千穂駅の近くにある奥村土牛記念美術館は村の代表的な文化施設。
