As a result of the relocation of the Papacy, Italian painters such as Martini and Matteo Giovanetti (date of birth and death unknown) were invited to move there between 1340 and 1350, and Italian culture flourished in the Papal Palace (with Giovanetti and others working on the mural decorations). The early Renaissance art transplanted here spread to the courts of European countries through diplomatic missions, eventually giving rise to the International Gothic style.

… International exchanges were already evident in the 1320s, when Giotto's innovations in Italian painting introduced three-dimensional effects and perspectives that suggested the presence of space, and in works north of the Alps, where a deeper understanding of humanity was shown in the expression of emotions. In the mid-14th century, however, they began to gain momentum through construction projects in the papal city of Avignon and the imperial city of Prague. The artisans who gathered in Avignon came from a variety of places, but Sienese painters such as S. Martini and Matteo Giovanetti (date of birth and death unknown) were invited to Avignon, where they worked on murals for the papal palace, altarpieces, and illustrations for manuscripts, and the influence of the Sienese school spread internationally through Avignon.
