It is a perennial or annual plant of the Papaveraceae family, native to North America and California, but has become widely naturalized in the arid regions of North and South America. It is an ornamental plant that was introduced to Japan at the beginning of the Meiji era. The stems are 30-50cm tall, and the leaves are stalked, alternate, and finely pinnately lobed. In summer, flower stalks emerge from between the leaves and produce beautiful, solitary orange flowers. The flowers are 5-8cm in diameter and open in sunlight. They have two calyxes that fall early, and four fan-shaped petals. After the flowers bloom, long capsules grow, about 8cm long.
