An old town in the center of Sado Island, Sado County, Niigata Prefecture. It occupies the central part of the Kuninaka Plain, on the eastern slope of the O-Sado Mountains. It is the center of rice cultivation in Sado. It is the trailhead for Mt. Kinpoku, and tourism development is also active. It is home to the remains of Emperor Juntoku's Kuroki Palace. In March 2004, it merged with Ryōtsu City, and the Sado County villages of Aikawa, Sawada, Niiho, Hatano, Mano, Ogi, Hamo, and Akadomari to form Sado City. 54.33 km2 . Population 7,097 (2003).
