French photographer and painter. Born in Courbevoie near Paris. He attended the Académie Julian in Paris from 1915, studying under painters Jean-Paul Laurens and Marcel-André Baschet (1862-1941). He continued to work as a painter after his first exhibition in 1922, but became known as a photographer after being discovered by John Szarkowski, head of the photography department at MoMA (Museum of Modern Art in New York), in 1963 and holding an exhibition at the museum.

Lartigues's direct motivation for taking photographs was that in 1901, his father gave him a handheld camera, which had just started to appear at the time. His first photograph was of his parents posing in the garden of their villa. Since then, Lartigues had become fascinated with photography and began to photograph the daily lives of his siblings, relatives, friends, and others, as if he were keeping a diary. Having grown up in a wealthy family near Paris during the glamorous era of the Belle Époque, Lartigues had an endless supply of novel subjects to photograph. Taking advantage of the characteristics of the handheld camera, which was easy to carry, he vividly captured every moment of a variety of scenes, including moments at home or at his villa, picnics at the seaside or at the racetrack, skiing, bicycle races, car races, gliding, and sports such as tennis. Lartigues' photographs, which sensitively capture the light-hearted movements of people enjoying themselves in the latest fashions, are full of humor and fully convey the original appeal of photography, which is to record beloved people and scenes, as condensed into the form of a family album.

His solo exhibition in New York in 1963 was his first exhibition in the 63 years since he started taking photographs. Since then, in 1966 , Les Photographies de JH Lartigue; Un Album Famille de la Belle Époque was published in French and English, followed by the photo collection Diary of a Century , edited by American fashion photographer Richard Avedon, in 1970. Lartigue, now over 70 years old, suddenly began to attract international attention as a photographer. However, Lartigue himself did not consider himself a professional photographer, and it is known that he always wrote "artist, painter" in the occupation column of his passport. Although he held many solo exhibitions and exhibited his paintings until 1978, his main occupation was painting, and photography was an amateur hobby. However, it is precisely for this reason that Lartigue's perspective is endowed with a freedom that is in no way bound by the theories or rules of photography, and his works are filled with the inherent joy of photography.

フランスの写真家、画家。パリ近郊クルブボア生まれ。1915年からパリのアカデミー・ジュリアンに通い、画家ジャン・ポール・ローランスやマルセル・アンドレ・バシェMarcel-André Baschet (1862-1941)に師事。22年にはじめて展覧会に出品して以来、画家として活動していたが、63年MoMA(ニューヨーク近代美術館)の写真部長ジョン・シャーカフスキーに見いだされ、同館で写真展を開催して以降は写真家として知られた。

 ラルティーグが写真を撮りはじめた直接のきっかけは、1901年、当時登場しはじめたハンド・カメラを父親からプレゼントされたことである。記念すべき最初の写真は、別荘の庭で両親にポーズをとらせて撮ったもので、以来写真の魅力に目覚めたラルティーグは、兄弟、親戚、友人などの日常生活をあたかも日記をつけるかのように撮影した。ベル・エポックの華やかな時代にパリ近郊の富裕な家庭に育った彼にとって、写真に撮るための新奇なモチーフは尽きることがなく、持ち運びの簡単なハンド・カメラの特質を生かして、自宅や別荘でのひととき、海辺や競馬場へのピクニック、スキー、自転車レース、自動車レース、グライダー、テニスといったスポーツなどさまざまな場面での一瞬一瞬を、生き生きととらえた。最新のモードを身につけて、楽しげに過ごす人々の軽やかな動きを鋭敏にとらえたラルティーグの写真はユーモアにあふれており、家族アルバムという形式に凝縮されているような、愛しい人々や光景を記録するという写真本来の魅力をあますところなく伝えるものとなっている。

 63年のニューヨークでの個展は、写真を撮りはじめて63年目にして初めての展覧会となったが、以降66年には『ラルティーグ写真集――ベル・エポックの家族アルバム』Les Photographies de J. H. Lartigue; Un Album Famille de la Belle Époqueがフランス語版、英語版と相次いで刊行され、続いて70年には、アメリカのファッション写真家リチャード・アベドンによって編まれた写真集『1世紀の日記』Diary of a Centuryが刊行されるなど、70歳を超えたラルティーグはにわかに写真家として国際的に注目されはじめた。とはいえラルティーグ本人は自分のことをプロの写真家とみなしていたわけではなく、パスポートの職業欄にはいつも「芸術家、画家」と記されていたことが知られている。78年にいたるまで幾多の個展を開催し絵画を発表してきた彼にとっての本業とはあくまでも絵画制作であり、写真はアマチュアとして嗜(たしな)むものだったのである。しかし、それゆえにこそ、ラルティーグの視線には、写真の理論や法則に一切しばられないのびやかさが備わっていて、その作品は写真が本来もっている楽しさがあふれるものとなった。
