...The driving force behind this was JA Rebling, who built a 246m-span suspension bridge over Niagara Falls in 1854, and the Brooklyn Bridge (487m span) in New York, which he and his son WA Rebling worked on, was completed in 1883. In the 20th century, record-breaking suspension bridges were built one after another in the United States, and in 1931, the George Washington Bridge, with a span of over 1km, was finally erected over the Hudson River in New York, and in 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge (1280m span), which held the throne for the next quarter century, was built. Since the dramatic accident caused by the wind on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in the same United States in 1940, it had become common practice to use truss structures for stiffening girders, but an innovative design that broke this rule was proposed in 1966 in the UK by the Severn Bridge (a bridge over the Severn River near Bristol).
