A tribe of American Indians who speak the Muscogee language. They are divided into the Muscogee (Upper Creek), Hitchiti, and Alabama (Lower Creek). They live in Georgia and Alabama, cultivate corn, squash, and beans, and have a bipartite social organization. Their society is matrilineal and clan-based. When they came into contact with Europeans in the 18th century, about 50 settlements had formed an alliance and actively negotiated and traded with Europeans. In the early 19th century, they lost a war with the United States and were relocated to Indiana and Texas, and by the beginning of the 20th century, most of them have been integrated into white society.
