Born: March 24, 1607, Vlissingen Died: April 29, 1676. A Syracuse Dutch soldier and admiral. He began his life as a sailor at a young age, and served in the Dutch Navy from 1641 to 1645. When the First Anglo-Dutch War broke out (1652-54), he rejoined the Navy, distinguished himself in battle, and was promoted to vice admiral in 1653. In the Second Anglo-Dutch War (65-67), he commanded the Commonwealth Fleet as an admiral, dealing a devastating blow to the Royal Navy and successfully concluding the Treaty of Breda, which was favorable to the Netherlands. In 1672, he fought against the Anglo-French combined fleet, but was defeated politically. From 1675 onwards, he led the Dutch-Spanish combined fleet against the French fleet, fighting against the French Navy in the Mediterranean, and died of wounds in 1676.
