A theory that considers cities as the centers of a region and describes the regularities in the distribution, number, and size of cities. It was developed by W. Christaller and A. Loesch. There is a hierarchy of cities from high to low depending on their functions, and the extent of their functions is called a metropolitan area. The size and degree of function is called centrality.
