… In March 1922, Russia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia formed the Transcaucasian Federal Union, and in December, the Transcaucasian Federal Republic. On December 30, the four nations of Russia, Ukraine, Belarus (now Belarus), and the Transcaucasus formed the Soviet Union. However, this was carried out despite fierce resistance from Filipp I. Makharadze (1868-1941) and Budu Mdivani (1877-1937) of the Georgian Communist Party, who sought independence for the republic, against the centralization of General Secretary Stalin, the Red Army, and Ordzhonikidze, the leader of the Caucasian Department of the Russian Communist Party (both from Georgia). Lenin, learning of this in his later years, severely criticized Stalin and others for their great-power oppression based on bureaucratic centralism. …
