Tall oatgrass

Japanese: オオカニツリ（英語表記）tall oatgrass

It is a grass of the grass family native to Europe, and is one of the naturalized plants in Japan. It is a perennial plant that grows somewhat clump-like, and is 60-100 cm tall. The stems are erect and have long internodes. The leaves are linear and long lanceolate, about 15 cm long and 4-10 mm wide, with rough, hairy surfaces. In May and June, it produces inflorescences about 15-30 cm long at the top of the stem. The inflorescences are conical, but are compact and almost spike-like, and are yellow with a purple tinge overall, shiny, with very short branches and numerous, dense spikelets.

ヨーロッパ原産のイネ科の牧草で，日本では帰化植物の一つである。やや叢生（そうせい）する多年草で，高さは60～100cmである。茎は立ち，節間は長い。葉は線状の長披針形で，長さは15cmくらい，幅は4～10mmで，表面に毛があってざらつく。5～6月ころ，茎の頂に長さ15～30cmほどの花序を出す。花序は円錐であるが，つまってほとんど穂状に見え，全体に紫色を帯びた黄色で，光沢があり，枝はきわめて短く，小穂は多数密生する。
