Paul Delaroche

French painter. His real name was Hyppolyte Delaroche. He was born and died in Paris. He first studied under Gros and produced historical paintings based on the advice of Géricault. After his debut at the Salon in 1822, he gained fame by incorporating melodramatic subject matter into historical paintings, and in 1831 he was made an Academician for his work Les Sons d'Édouard (Louvre Museum). He was active in a variety of fields, including religious paintings and murals, but his style, which was already considered a compromise between romanticism and classicism in his time, was a typical example of academicism in the first half of the 19th century.

フランスの画家。本名Hyppolyte Delaroche。パリに生まれ、同地に没。最初グロに学び、ジェリコーの忠告に基づいて歴史画を制作。1822年のサロンへのデビュー以後、歴史画にメロドラマ風の題材を盛り込んで名声を博し、31年の『エドゥワールの息子たち』（ルーブル美術館）でアカデミー会員になった。宗教画、壁画など多様な活動をしたが、同時代にすでにロマン主義と古典主義の妥協とみなされていた彼の画風は、19世紀前半のアカデミズムの一つの典型であった。
